Shlohmo – Later

01-14-2013

New music Monday! There have been so many songs that I wanted to blog about in the past week but a player can’t stop the game to write so I’ve fallen off the map again, if only briefly. Fine, I am indeed not a playa…I just crush a lot 😉

I’m still pressed for time but, since many of you are music junkies like me, I though I’d hit you with a quick fix to stop the jitters. NO, it’s not going to be that new JT. I posted about it on my Facebook Fanpage yesterday (follow that!)  but I refuse to write about it. For starters, I like to think that Wait And Scene is not blogging about the things that everyone has already heard and for seconds (?), let’s be real, it’s good and catchy but it’s not THAT amazing. Remember Cry Me a River? Much more top shelf stuff.

I’ve decided to blog about LA-producer Shlohmo instead because I like him and he has swallowed up a good chunk of my Monday evening with this elephantine track (…just nod). This is one of five songs on his upcoming EP ‘Laid Out’ said to be released on March 5th. If you would have played me this song five or so years ago, I would’ve been all, “Coo coo but where are the vocals?” because I was once hard as a rock (not to be confused with Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson) and I wasn’t moved by the powers of  an instrumental track. Today, I sit here listening to this song on repeat, eyes closed, doing a slow-mo (Shlohmo!) version of the Harlem Shake in my recliner. Imagine it and embrace it. I’ve played it ten times in a row so far and every time I listen I feel something new. If you don’t like this song come back to it in five years and see if you’ve managed to get on my level or, more impressively, Shlohmo’s level. Man, I’m snarky on Mondays.

Toodles!

-Jenna

P.S. I’m pretty sure I haven’t mentioned my March travel plans in past blog entries (cue *eye rolls*) but I hope to see Shlohmo in Austin at SXSW about a week after the EP release.

Remember when the hot track Sweater Weather came out and I was freaking out about this band called The Neighbourhood!? …No? Because I didn’t have a blog back then? Okay, valid point…but anyone who knows me personally will remember my excitement. Now, almost a year later, they are starting to get some alternative radio play here in Portland. Yes radio! It’s 2012, I have two iPods and an iPhone, and I still tune into the radio, DEAL WITH IT…all the cool people are listening. Anyways, I’m not saying that I’m music’s fortune teller (feel free to call me that if you want…) but I am saying that that isn’t the first time that my music obsessions have become mainstream enough to get radio play *cough* alt-J *cough*. Read that statement as you will…and continue to read Wait And Scene!

Back to talking about the ‘hood…These California natives, with an affinity for British English, are back with this darker, more cinematic release taken from their forthcoming EP Thank You rumored to be released mid-December. Let It Go is the first song we’ve heard from The Neighbourhood since they released their amazing EP I’m Sorry back in August (stream this and cop it)…unless you count their reworking of one of the songs on that EP called Female Robbery. This brand new track got me pumped about all the new stuff we’ll soon hear from them. With their unique, layered sound and epic black and white music videos, I can see what the future holds for these guys and it’s bright as the Cali sun!

P.s. Speaking of Female Robbery, be careful if you’re shopping the Black Friday sales tomorrow; females can be vicious. Happy American Thanksgiving, loyal readers of Wait And Scene! I’m thankful for you!
