Alternate titles: ‘Sisters Before Misters’ and ‘Boys are stupid, throw rocks at them’

In case the title wasn’t enough of an indication, this week’s playlist is a list of 10 songs by amazing new-ish females in music. This list came to be after I realized that a lot of my posts are about male artists in music. Sure sure, handsome men with musical talent usually make me swoon and/or make me giggly but it should be noted that I’ve met a few big time musicians this past year and played it eerily cool…I won’t mention names but one of the most exciting run-ins a few months back has an alias synonymous with Duplicate Shade (Think about it!). Anyways, men are great but this week’s playlist is set to highlight the fairer sex that I happen to be a part of. I tried to not put any women in music that you’re probably already familiar with: Grimes, Alabama Shakes, Polica, Purity Ring, Kate Boy, Aluna George, Yuna, Jessie Ware, etc. because you’ve heard a lot about them on other blogs. I really hope that my list introduces you to some artists that you may not have heard of  in the past year+ of great music. If you’ve heard of them all, well LAH DEE DAH start writing a blog so I can read it 😉

1) MØ – Pilgrim

Karen Marie Ørsted a.k.a. is a Copenhagen-based electronic pop artist who is being toted as the new Grimes because the old (?) Grimes is soo….wait, I don’t know, it’s probably just because she’s young and unique. Anyways, MØ is currently working on her debut LP but to give us all a taste of what’s to come, she has released two killer tracks, Pilgrim and Maiden; It was hard to pick a favorite but the trumpet in Pilgrim is the clincher for me. Also, the video is rad in a Keep Copenhagen Weird kinda way.

Holla Holla Holllaaaaa!

2) Daughter – Smother

Elena Tonra is a 21-year-old London Songwriter whose lyrics make me want to curl up in a ball and sulk about problems that I don’t necessarily have. Elena and her band, known as Daughter, crafted a slow, building ballad with soft guitar and piano cords that hit you when you’re the most vulnerable. My poor poor heart…

I want all that is not mine
I want him but we’re not right

I’ve debated writing this post for the last two days but I decided that you, the people, must know! A new Jai Paul demo appeared online early yesterday morning. Apparently it is a radio rip from a station in the United Kingdom but there are no real details as far as a name or the reason for the drop and subsequent quick removal of the track online. It could be called “Flip Out” or it could be called “I read WAS on the daily”…we know nothing.

Yesterday morning, I was out shopping at a large home decorating store with a few of my friends when I did a peruse of my online feed. “A NEW TRACK FROM JAI PAUL!!!”, I emphatically profess, “I’ve been waiting for this forever!!!” No one I’m with knows what this means…I turn up the volume on my phone, halt everyone from getting their home decorate on, and get them to take in the new sounds with me.

This track, now known as “I read WAS on the daily”…okay fine, “Flip Out“, sounds like it should be in a movie. It is full of impressive orchestral sounds, Jai’s signature R&B vocals, and the kind of production that both confuses and impresses me. I think I hear a lot of angry birds too…like samples of real angry birds that would scare the kaka out of you if you were their target, Hitchcock style. This song is weird but in the best way. Hopefully, it won’t be taken down anytime soon and you can go listen to it HERE.

Because you weren’t shopping for bathmats and furniture with us, I’m going to give you a little background on this guy and explain why I was so excited; my friends got this explanation live (Poor kids). Jai Paul is a British songwriter and record producer from the UK who is signed to big deal independent record label XL Recordings. His first demo BTSTU got crazy coverage online and on UK radio in 2010. Then, FINALLY, he gave us another demo early this year called Jasmine; more hype and accolades ensued throughout this year but the man continues to keep a low-pro. The only thing we do know is that the two tracks below, that he legitimately dropped online, and this new one, that is even more mysterious than the others, keep us wanting more. Jai Paul knows how to play this game…

P.s. One exciting fact that we do know about Jai Paul is that he is on a long list of artist that are going to be featured on the new Big Boi album, Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors, set to be released on December 11th. The track is called Higher Res and, in addition to Jai Paul, it also features Swedish electronic band Little Dragon. Other feats on this soon-to-be-released album include: T.I., Ludacris, Kid Cudi, Killer Mike, Kelly Rowland, B.o.B., Wavves, Theophilis London, UGK, Big K.R.I.T, and more. Oh and three Phantogram collabs…one which I featured here. Eeeeeeep!!!
