TX

This is Jenna at Wait And Scene giving you all the up-to-date info on SXSW…wait a minute! That certainly didn’t happen as planned. Blog smog. Day whiskey and new friends happened and I had the best GD time of my life. Oh and the music, ALL OF THE SHOWS!! You wouldn’t believe all the shows that I was lucky to see in a week’s time…another thing that you probably won’t believe is the info I’m about to share with you in this series. Here is entry one about my favorite shows during the music bender that was Southby. These entries are in no particular order and my top live music picks are about as random as my music taste. Get into it!

The Warner Sound Captured by Nikon Party (first product name drop!) at The Belmont was DOPE and perfect precursor to the craziness we were going to experience for the entire week after this show. It was a packed and diverse line-up of awesome. I could talk about each artist in essay format, because quite apparently that’s what I do, but I’ll try to make it snappy…

Spoiler: my favorite did not perform last in this showcase but they do come at the end of this post.

 THE PERFORMERS

Sirah

She is not my steeze…that is all.

Charli XCX

She is surprisingly not ideal live (I’m being nice) and I really do enjoy her album…I even blogged about her project once.

Blondfire

They’re talented and I totally get why people like them but…a *yawn* from me and another small *yawn* because this was the second time I saw them at SXSW without really planning on it.

Rockie Fresh

He lives up to his fresh name and I recall him being good live but nothing memorable happened, so yeah…

Macklemore and Ryan Lewis

I love these guys and I’d seen them a LOT of times prior to this show…from the small town club show days to sold out arenas, it’s always great to see them and they kill it live every single time. Go see them whenever and wherever you can, you won’t be sorry!

Action Bronson

Dude sounds like Ghostfa…oh, he hates when people say that? Okay…um he has a couple hundred pounds on me so I’ll drop the comparisons. Bronson was really cool to see live and he is a performer and a half. Highlights of his set: he hopped over the guardrail and rapped through the tightly packed crowd and up the steps to the roof top, mid rap he yelled at people to get off their phones then seamlessly continued rapping, and the crowning jewel (and one of my favorite SXSW moments) was when he lifted a very excited paraplegic fan onto his shoulders and wore him like the finest of fur stole for an ENTIRE song. REALLY.

Icona Pop

For me, Icona Pop were the real winners of this showcase. They’re a synth-pop duo from Sweden; they’re adorable, they’re energetic, the base beats were loud, their voices were perfect live, and everyone was dancing and had an amazing time while they were on stage. I was a fan long before seeing them live at SXSW and even before their biggest hit ‘I Love it’ was on an epi of HBO’s GIRLS but this performance just solidified the love. If you have a chance to see them live DO THAT, okay?

icona2

I took all the second rate pictures (with my phone, NOT WITH A NIKON) that I added to this blog post but this shot is actually good, if I do say so myself. It was taken through a fence while listening to Icona Pop being interviewed the day after The Belmont show. Stalker-styles!

Just try to listen to their song and not feel overwhelming joy. Impossible!

Side note: If you met a couple of really cool girls at Southby who said they were in a band called “Icona Bop” I may know the two girls that you met…their band just hasn’t officially formed yet 😉

A.Dd+ – Suitcases

11-20-2012

In the past four years, the Dallas, TX rap scene has brought us an interesting mix of artists.  On one hand, we have “talent” like the GS Boyz known for being the creators of every white girl’s favorite dance moves the Booty Dew and the Stanky Legg. I certainly can’t think of any other moves that allow me to lean wit it and drop wit it quite like the BD and SL but let’s be real, these guys were never going to change the rap game. Around that same time, some true Texas talent emerged on the scene. Paris Pershun and Slim Gravy are an up-and-coming rap duo better known as A.Dd+. They have been dropping mixtapes since 2009 but they received mainstream media props in 2011 when they released their debut LP, When Pigs Fly, which is produced entirely by Dallas producer, Picnictyme. A few days ago, they finally dropped a track off their upcoming release, DiveHiFlyLo: The Mixtape, which is also produced  by their go-to, Picnictyme. Suitcases has that old-school rap sound with a simplistic beat and repetitive, sythy keyboard sounds. It’s another A.Dd+ banger!

Word on the web is that these guys killed at SXSW last year so I’m hoping they’re back at it again this year. Wait And Scene is going to “pack it up” can give you that new news straight from downtown Austin!
